A Canadian woman has successfully sued a drug dealer who sold her methamphetamine (crystal meth). The woman suffered a heart attack and spent 23 days in a coma after taking the drug.

It feels like this country's youngsters are constantly in hospital after tangling with legal highs. Every day, there's another story in the news. Or rather, a rehash of the same couple of stories. Still, if it's all over the media, it must be important, right? Kids today are spiraling out of control and legal highs are to blame! We must obviously ban them!

Well, not quite.

A new reseach paper, published on 19^th August, compared 21,967 users of "psychedlic drugs" with a representative sample of the population (130,152 total) to determine the effects of LSD, psilocybin and peyote on mental health.

It looks like the government will be reviewing its ridiculously-out-of-date drug laws in the spring of 2014, possibly introducing new legislation  to ban legal highs that are “substantially similar” to already illegal substances. If they can pull it off, it just might work. Well, it will work in the sense that it will make it difficult to buy legal highs online and in headshops, which seems to be the intended goal. What it won’t do is make anyone safer. Far from it!
